You can't change the design intent of the kayak w/o major surgery. It's not a rough water design. It's meant to go fast in a straight line on a mirror.

You could do a coaming-ectomy on it, build a small, round coaming, turn it into a quasi-greenland kayak, get a skirt and a good roll and off you go. Quickly.

Otherwise I'd keep it on the flat. No amount of gluing crap on the sides is going to help anything but to ugly it up. Outrigger training wheels are the best bet, you can remove them easily w no permanent scars. Or, just learn to paddle it as is. Shouldnt take long to get used to it. In warm water.

I doubt you are supposed to sit with your back flat up on the rear of the coaming. Then again, never paddled a k1, but that would seem to inhibit torso rotation.

Go look up videos of k1s in action. Get an idea what you have there, it's in a diff class than the coho, it's not a sea kayak. You may learn to manage it in waves and chop, but it will be a wet ride. Primary stability is not your friend in those situations anyway.
