S&G: Best Hatch Gasket

I am in the process of redoing the hatches on my wife's Pygmy Osprey Std. I had under deck bungees and they killed my 76 yr old hands putting the hatches on and off and they leaked. I went back to the Pygmy style straps but I took out the hatch gasket on the front hatch and now need to replace it. What material works best for the gasket? Weather stripping seems to be too flexible and might leak so I am looking for a good gasket material without having to take out the lips under the hatch opening.
