Heh heh, but that would be too similar to the guillemot 'cockpit apron' and thereby be unpatentable.

I pointed out the similarity to the patent holder in our discussions. He said his patent was different and pointed to the pictures. Unfortunately, what matter is what is written in the patent claim. The words are what defines the patent.

If you read the claim of the patent below, my style apron is covered by the patent.

1. A cockpit system for a kayak having a deck and a cockpit opening defined in the deck, the cockpit system comprising:
bow and stern deck portions forming the deck, where
the cockpit opening is formed in the bow deck portion, and
a deck gap region is formed between the bow deck portion and the stern deck portion;
a coaming assembly that extends around the cockpit opening; and
a transition member arranged between the bow deck portion and the stern deck portion, where the transition member is sized and dimensioned to fill the deck gap region; wherein
the bow deck portion adjacent to the transition member is lower than the stern deck portion adjacent to the transition member under normal use of the kayak.

Using the photo of my S&G Guillemot below as a reference, take a look at the patent claim piece by piece:

1. A cockpit system for a kayak having a deck and a cockpit opening defined in the deck,
S&G Guillemot has a deck and a cockpit opening defined in the deck.

a) the cockpit system comprises:bow and stern deck portions forming the deck, where the cockpit opening is formed in the bow deck portion, and a deck gap region is formed between the bow deck portion and the stern deck portion;
S&G Guillemot has a bow deck and with a separation between it and the stern deck. The cockpit opening is formed in the deck. There is a gap region between the bow deck and the stern deck.

b) a coaming assembly that extends around the cockpit opening;
S&G Guillemot exhibits a coaming assembly around the cockpit opening.

c) a transition member arranged between the bow deck portion and the stern deck portion, where the transition member is sized and dimensioned to fill the deck gap region
S&G Guillemot exhibits a transition member between a stern deck and a bow deck portion. This member fills the gap between the bow deck and stern deck.

d) the bow deck portion adjacent to the transition member is lower than the stern deck portion adjacent to the transition member under normal use of the kayak
S&G Guillemot exhibits a deck adjacent to the stern deck that transitions lower than the stern deck.

There are lots of kayaks that existed before the patent application where you can take the patent claims piece by piece and see that they fit easily. This is why the patent does not provide the protection the patent holder wanted when he spent the money for the patent.
