This building forum’s archive is also helpful for this with posts from Grant Goltz of Squeedunk kayaks demonstrating your type of plywood recess approach back in 1999, as well as another in Aug 2000 [Andrew Eddy] describing a similar kayak featured in the NSW Sea Kayaker Magazine.

There are all kinds of prior art:
We have old school whitewater from the 1970's and before:

We have the Nordckpp from the 70's:

Rob Macks had a recess on his Firestar around 2003 or before:

I was doing my apron in at least 1993:

I published my method in Sea Kayaker Magazine in 1995:

The Mariner Elan had a recess in 1999:

Tom Jordin brought a Pygmy modified with a recess to Joe Greenley's West Coast Wooden Kayak Rendezvous in 2001. The patent holder lives attended this event, and saw this kayak. It was shortly after when this patent application was submitted

The world has been rife with recessed cockpits for quite some time.

I never, ever could understand the slow introduction of a lowered cockpit by either Pygmy or CLC - as the approach had been so ubiquitous for WW kayaks for decades and decades.

I think the simplest explanation is simplicity. From a kit perspective, the recess is one more complicating step. If customers seemed content without a recess, it makes the kits easier not to include it
