Rich,

The malisk was not steam bent, it was just laminated with epoxy and cedar.

If you didn't push the corners so high you might be able to put the upper laminated piece just above the plywood frame, but I would only try if I decided to re-skin if it did not work well.

I don't think I want to try.

But that would be good for at least 1" and possibly up to 1.5 if you made a thinner lamination like Bill suggested.
That is really a lot.
