For a good seal I would roll on epoy and give it a good blast with the heat gun to get it really runny and help it penetrate the timber... Then I'd roll on an extra coat for luck while the first coat is still a bit tacky. I wouldn't heat gun the second coat.

Of course you may also need to use a brush in the fiddly corners. :-)

For this kind of job a little epoxy goes quite a long way, especially the heated coat. Try it in a scrap first.
