Having a contrasting strip at the water line (or parallel to it) does you some big favors. Now any casual observer can be called upon to let you know if your fore-aft trim is correct. Also when it comes time to fit out your cockpit, you can measure from this waterline strip and know if things are aligned in the vertical plane.
