I've always wished I had someone else to photograph my hands at work. It would focus the viewer in on what is important.
With SOF boats there is a lot going on with the boat itself, so clutter in the background really detracts. To alleviate this I sometimes photoshop by slightly blurring and darkening the background.

The thing that I think is important to view is not always what is important for someone else. It is difficult to take a shot broadside of a kayak and have anything descent to look at. There's just not much detail. For that reason I shoot at an angle from the front a lot. I also don't try to show everything in one shot, but instead just show parts of the boat.
