Seems like an excellent method to get the complex curves.
The only thing I would suggest differently, is to use a piece of stiff wire as a curve template, like a #10 groundwire.

I'm not sure that soakiing or steaming will be enough to get the wood to conform.

I think a better way is the way I built the seat fior my K1.

The seat should be visible in the first post of this thread and the construction is explained and shown in a post a bit further down.
