Tighten the straps so they are snug, use a bow line. Check the strap regularly.

Just remember that "tighten the straps so they are snug" does not mean tighten them until you hear the hull crack and then back them of a bit. Plenty of K1 paddlers have been a bit enthusiastic, especially with ratchet straps and have cracked the kayak.

The same goes for the bow line. There is a lot of leverage there, so it is best to think of it as a backup safety line. A bow line adds a huge safety margin.

I have carried canoes and kayaks and have never seen any evidence that an open cockpit causes problems.
