Other: Alligators?!

Hello,
I will likely be in Florida (Sarasota area) for a few months this summer. Recently I've come upon some articles about alligator-human interactions. Since alligators are pretty much everywhere, I wonder how much of a danger they pose to kayakers on inland waters? Real danger? No issue at all? Somewhere in between?
I'd appreciate any insight, especially from people who live and kayak in the alligator/crocodile country.
