Gators are generally near the shore but I have seen them in the middle of wide rivers like the St Johns. You definitely do not want to paddle in the middle of a wide river in Florida, because that is where the muscle boats are, and unlike gators, they are a very real threat. Most of the time, gators will go under before you get within 10 feet. You are really worrying too much about gators. Follow the advise above and you will be fine.
