I was reading in Gougeons on Wooden Boat Building that they recommend scotchbrite.
Unless you are brutal you wont actually remove anything, just scuff it up.

But really you of all people know you should never stop working without filling the weave - at least with one coat. That gives you a very small margin for error, at least
