I don't know that it is an allergy, but if I don't use a good mask while cutting strips I will get congestion and flu like symptoms for a couple of days.

I had a friend I encouraged to built a Great Auk, we cut the strips together with masks and he was alright.
Stripped the hull, he was alright.
Sanded out the inside and outside and could not return to the garage without getting strong congestion. Eventually all he had to do was open the door to the garage.
I ended up stripping and glassing the deck and glassing the hull for him.
He spent a lot of time cleaning out the garage so he can use it.

Some will have a problem, you can reduce the risk with a good mask and a dust extraction system which runs all the time you are working, and cleaning up as much as you can.

Then again, you might not ever have more than temporary issues.
