I use one of those too, though I use a pleated filter, doesn't move as much air but takes more dust out of what it moves.

Planing though just cuts the wood cells, thus the smell, no dust or there certainly shouldn't be. You might be sensitized to the smell (gas) so a mask might be a good idea. You might call your mast supplier and see what filter works best on cedar since it's very likely not listed.
