When you say, a lot of work, how so? Did you just mask a shear strip and stain the rest?
I helped an accent strip along by masking and air brushing some dark stain (alcohol stain) .
I got no bleed along the tape edge. I already had contrast with dark cedar and pine but in one area the cedar started to run lighter. So, I wanted to fix it.

I think, you just have to experiment with your stain application. Maybe wiping on with cloth?
