Any suggestions/experiences would be appreciated.

You may have considered it already, but a fresh-air supply mask or hood with a supply unit like the Hobby-Air could be a step up in protection.
I use one for painting and I think it's a big improvement over a cartridge respirator. (It's also cooler and more pleasant IMO.)
