I put together a quick video from clips taken last year showing how I do the first pass sanding.

Here I am sanding the raw strips for the first pass with a Festool Rotex 125 sander. I've got the sander on "coarse" mode and, if I remember correctly, 80 grit sandpaper with a contour pad.

Prior to starting the sanding, I did a quick scraping with a paint scraper to remove glue drips and a quick pass with a block plane to start knocking the corners off between the strips.

The primary goal of this first sanding is to blend together the strips into a seamless smooth surface. The boat should be fair lengthwise, but there are facets formed by the flat surfaces of the strips.

If everything goes right, it shouldn't take long to do this first pass. By moving the sander at a moderate, but consistent speed the sander will easily knock down the higher spots in one pass.

I do a cross-hatch pattern on each section 12 to 14 inch (30 - 35cm) with vertical/transverse motion followed by horizontal/longitudinal motion. The cross hatch pattern helps assure consistent coverage over the whole section. Overlapping each pass by about 1/3rd. After finishing each section I move on to the next section.

The sander is generally kept flat to the surface or with pressure about centered on the pad on curve surfaces. I move my hands around on the sander to maintain a comfortable grip and posture. I manipulate the sander much like I use a hockey stick. The left hand is the sensor and pivot, and the right hand is the control.

While I started with 80 grit on this boat, for some boats with more distinct transitions between strips due to tighter curves or sloppier workmanship, I may start with 60 grit or worse sandpaper. After leveling the whole boat with the coarse sandpaper, I will work my way up through the grits using the same technique to remove the scratch marks.
