It's kinda funny... In all my years of boat building (over 12 years and 40 kayaks or canoes I have used WEST System once. My wife's grandfather gave me had some left over from a canoe project. I have no recollection of how it was to work with.
I relied on MAS for years, using it for all my wet-out, coating and bonding. Since 2012 I've been using a bio-derived epoxy (Super Sap CLR/CLF). I generally love it. It's very clear (optional brightener available), UV stable, has no odor and cures quickly with no blush. One issue though is CLR is little thicker than MAS. It wets them out crystal clear, even with the tightest woven cloths. It just takes longer.
This winter I am trying a new resin for initial wetting out (Adtech 820). It was recommended by my carbon fiber supplier (Soller Composites). The strength properties are incredible. It's also very thin. It has about half the viscosity of CLR using the medium hardener (325 cps compared to 725 to 800 cps, both at 77F. Slow is 425 cps). For comparison West is 650-975 cps, MAS is 550 to 650 cps and Raka is about 600. Water has a viscosity of 1 cps, honey is between 2,000 and 10,000.
So far I've been impressed with the Adtech. I used it last weekend to laminate the inside of my 10 year old daughter's new S&G baidarka. I used a single lamination of 3.7oz tightweave glass and it wetted out almost instantly. Very little blushing. The fabric was laid out dry and the resin applied with a roller. (Yes, she is helping build it.)
