Second that. Don't mess with the strips. Just build your boat, and when you sand it, perhaps you can be a little more liberal with the sanding. I wouldn't worry about it. My first single kayak I built, I was worried about the weight. Unless you really go heavy on the epoxy, it will turn out well, and the few pounds you might save aren't that big of a deal. Have fun!
