It really is amazing how 'wrong' you can do things and epoxy will still work. However you do risk consistency by not doing it 'right'. Also to try the test fully, you would need to compare your test piece to one done properly to ascertain if there are strength differences that are maybe not easily apparent and accurate measurement of the strength of the two different epoxy coats.
