The photo below was sent to me by someone looking for information about this 100+ year old kayak built by the "eskimos" for a special race. As you can see, it is a strip-built kayak, certainly less than 30 years old, where the epoxy and fiberglass is delaminating. Obviously, some aspect of his lay procedure was lacking.

The physical properties of epoxy change as it ages. It gets less flexible as it continues to harden, UV breaks it down, weaknesses start to manifest themselves.

I think we can get away with a lot of shortcuts and mistakes, but the closer to "ideal" we stay, the longer the boat will last.
