I don't know if your correspondent checked (by sanding and smelling?), but (as you know) lots of strip canoes and kayaks were built with polyester resin 'back in the day'.
After I told him that his kayak was not 100 years old I did not hear back from him. It may well be polyester, but the same issues apply with regards to prep work. Even though it is not as good an adhesive, polyester will last for years.
