Material: Painting Hull

I glassed my unsealed Spring Run hull with 6 oz. cloth and had less than stellar results. I can live with white specks everywhere but don't like the wood selection.
I want to either apply tinted Schooner varnish or paint to the hull. Any help on what tint or paint to use and application greatly appreciated. I haven't found any info in the forum search I can use.
