I too am building a Great Auk and are currently working on the rear hatch. My biggest challenge so far with the hatch is getting the correct weather stripping to collapse the right amount so that the hatch ends up flush. I am using magnets and it's been hard to determine what will end up compressing just the right amount.
Has anyone tried casting a gasket from silicon? I have milled a step in the hatch sealing area but it has proven to not be deep enough for the available weatherstrippings so I was thinking of layering on masking tape (maybe 2-3 layers) to the mating surface of hatch and rim and injecting silicon in the gasket area hoping that it would compress enough when cured to be fairly water tight and end up with the cover being flush. By "fairly" I mean enough to keep water that comes over the deck out. I don't expect the magnets to hold the hatch tight enough in a roll. I would just make sure the dry bags inside are tethered to the compartment in the case of and unintentional capsize.
