There was a lot of talk in every review I read about the cure temperature. I've kind of missed my cold weather window, so it may not be an issue... I read a review on a site dedicated to streamliner bicycles, and one reviewer said that he heated the resin to 100*f before adding the hardener, and they had to work quickly because it started to gel.
So- if you're trying to keep the weight down- as long as you aren't starving the glass at the top it's not really a bad thing that resin is running out of the fabric before it gels- it's resin that you didn't get out with a squeegee, right? It's just weight.
Did it do all right with the fill coat? Have you tried mixing any fillers with it? It seems like if you add microlte fairing compound to a very thin resin it would make an ideal filler- particularly if it gels slowly- you would introduce far fewer bubbles, which means much less prep work. West 207 does not make good fairing compound. My conjecture is that it's because the resin is too thick. It holds bubbles, and sets up too fast when you thicken it.
Anyway- thanks for the comments. The kayak is looking good. I'm still waiting to get started.
