If I do another boat I will probably not use carbon. It does have some good qualities regarding strength and impact resistance, but S-glass is close to it. Cabon fiber doesn't like to form around sharp corners, and I have even tried vacuum bagging it on the coaming after building the coaming from strips. If I used it on a hull again I would probably resin infuse it because each time I've used it on the hull I have had large air bubbles form under the fabric after an hour or so. Tech support at West Systems told me it was caused by improper temperature regulation. Ideally the hull should be warmed for a a few hours and then cooled slightly when applying the carbon. He was right, because I had better luck on this last one.
The other problem with carbon fiber is that it shows every little scratch as a white mark against the black background. These are usually only surface markings and I've just polished them out and put a fresh coat of vanish on at the end of the year. My paddling and camping locales are really all rock and the water is usually rough, so i've have really put my first boat to the test with no issues other than scratches.
