I'll admit skegs can work but... Certainly there are paddlers here, Freya was one, who found their skeg kept jamming with gravel each time they launched. That leads to another piece of string, the external pull-down. Paul Caffyn found his skeg a danger forcing down-wind travel when he didn't want to, though the type used then was a slip-on over the stern type and not easily stowed. One major thing against them is the room they take up in the aft compartment, especially if multi-day touring.

With all that, a properly designed rudder, and just as important, well designed rudder pedals, make a kayak so much easier to handle. It can be easily stowed and should be able to stand up to a lot of abuse. I did say "properly designed and built".

Rudders did get a "bad rap" in the States due to the worst design of pedals possible, the sliding pedals which made impossible to brace against properly and prone to jamming with sand.
