I made an internal 2x4 strongback from 1/2" plywood.

Actually it would be better to use plywood for the sides and solid wood for the top and bottom cap.
The beam will sag, and needs to be supported at about 3 places due to sag.

I couldn't find a good enough long 2x4 of solid wood.

I do think the plywood one will be more stable with changes in humidity.
