Well, I didn't, and I don't think I would. I used light pine tar on my last build and it has worked very well. I suggested putting linseed oil on top of that if it's sticky. Mine seemed to only be sticky where there was hot direct sunlight on it when I applied it. The other places it seemed to soak in family well. The pine tar should be antiseptic enough to protect the linseed oil.

So... on the subject... I am assuming he is using hardware store boiled linseed oil. That type of boiled linseed oil isn't actually boiled, it's got chemicals including lead, cadmium, and cobalt to force it to "dry." Those things are pretty toxic to mildew. Raw linseed oil or polymerized linseed oil are different, and so is the high-end pure organic linseed oil.
