Is my first and top priority to learn how to roll?

A good forward stroke, and the basics of bracing is the foundation of safe paddling. Being able to power a kayak efficiently when you need to avoid or get out of trouble will make it less likely that you need to rescue yourself.

A roll is by far the most efficient form of self rescue and knowing how to roll will give you confidence to try other riskier things. It is well worth the effort to learn to roll, it is a valuable safety skill, but a roll alone will not make you safer.

You need to learn how to recognize and avoid danger to paddle safely. Time and experience will help your judgment, and strong paddling will keep you out of danger. A roll will give you the opportunity to keep paddling should you get into trouble, but it is the forward stroke and bracing that will save you.
