Nick's advice is excellent, a few details though.

In big water (and Lake Erie is certainly that) you really want a kayak with a couple features. Either bulkheads at both ends (usually with waterproof hatches) or floatbags in the ends. Bulkheads are better but SOF's work fine and bulkheads and hatches are a pain to install in them.

Also a relatively small cockpit with a skirt that won't instantly implode if a wave dumps on it. This doesn't necessarily mean an ocean cockpit though there is nothing wrong with them, but not something huge.

Recreational boats (rec boats) don't belong on big water IMHO.
