It appears this discussion goes on without establishing some basic definitions, ex. "specific" and "suitable" for what?
Nick stresses the safety aspect of the paddling, and he is correct. However, while staying alive is the first priority, there are other aspects of kayaking, and here is where the conditions-specific design comes into play.
Ex. I paddle for fitness, exclusively on calm inland rivers and lakes. My boats are long, narrow, hard to turn, nor rudder or skeg with almost 0 rocker. If I took them to sea, it would be a disaster. However, I never did and never will take them to the sea - they will remain in the environment they are designed for, and they work well here.
