You may be 'over-thinking' the protection a bit, IMO.

Quite a few people in my regular paddling group use Greenland sticks, and I don't think any of them treat the paddle ends differently than the rest of the stick.

In Greenland where the paddles were used to push ice and wood was more scarce than bone it made sense to add bone ends to some paddles. It may be that those are the paddles which survived best and made their way to collectors and museums?

Anyway, this will not be your last Greenland paddle- you can always change details on the next one.
My advice: oil it and use it. Or, just use it without oil and repair it with epoxy when needed.

Thanks for the thoughts, John. Maybe I am overthinking it--but I don't want to ruin the paddle in short order. I don't care about cosmetic dings; I just don't want so many gouges along the soft cedar edges that the paddle becomes noisy or starts losing wood along those areas.

As to not using even oil: Wouldn't the raised grain abrade the hands?
