As to not using even oil: Wouldn't the raised grain abrade the hands?

After you have completed your sanding, wet the paddle with a sponge and fresh water.

Allow it to dry.

Sand off the 'hairy bits' with sharp (new) sandpaper.

You can repeat this a couple of times if necessary. It's a standard technique when finishing acoustic guitars, so don't worry about it damaging your paddle!

In canoeing, many people used to believe (with reason) that varnish caused blisters, so would sand off the finish where the hands gripped the paddle.
