Although it will be somewhat of a hassle on a long seam, one method I've used when doing sharp-edged repairs (like keels) is to cover it with clear packing tape strips run across the patch. It will definitely hold it in place and you can scrape off any glue residue easily (a carbide scraper is ideal for that and feather glass edges), or just clean it up with lacquer thinner.
