My GP's are just WRC that are plane ended, no protection. I don't treat them any different than any other paddle and other than scratches they've held up just fine.

I wouldn't use a hard finish either, like varnish nor a hard finished oil like Dek's. I use tung oil and it gives a nice soft finish, has to be reapplied on occasion but that's pretty easy. Just a light sand, apply the oil, wait for 1/2 an hour and wipe off what's left on the paddle, dries over night.

A GP is meant to be able to slide easily through your hands so a finish like varnish will make it stick to your hands when wet, oil finishes let it slide while maintaining a grip.
