Having just had an encounter of a painful kind with the corner of a stone step, when I heard a definite crack from my wonderful Petrel (in fairness, I got dropped a couple of feet onto the step by a wave) I discovered to my horror when inspecting the damage that I had at some point ni the fairly distant past scraped right through the glass to the wood on the edge of the chine. The water had been getting in for a while, and the wood was starting to rot.
My wife has been complaining that the kayak leaks somewhere around the cockpit - to which I always told her to check her spraydeck - and I now discovered that the water had got as far as the seam, and the walnut I used for an accent strip had had some sort of reaction with the epoxy and the seam had split along a couple of feet.
So I decided to strip all the fibreglass off, take the deck and hull apart, and generally spruce things up.
However I didn't pay enough attention to Nick's video on stripping the old fibreglass off, and I didn't cut and leave it around the cockpit recess, as he did.
So now for the question.
How am I going to tidy up the edge of the old glass around the cockpit rim?
I have loosened it all the way to the upstand :(
