Until I saw your method, I was reluctant to build a GP because I couldn't bring myself to convert most of the piece of timber into shavings.

I have built about nine or ten using your method and can't understand why anyone would do it any other way. :) :)

I think it is a very clever way to build a GP.

As far as protection and finish goes, I fit a hardwood tip and have had more success with some old decking oil left over from another job than any other finish I have tried.

If the hardwood tip is a crescent shape, there is no need for dowels or anything else to stop it breaking off.
