Yeah I hadn't read that far when I posted last night.

It is pretty interesting ... I wonder if it's one of those topics that is interesting but not actually material due to the seam being so strong whichever method you use.

A bit like deciding whether to use a tall thin gallon jug or a short fat gallon jug to carry a cup of water. One is technically less likely to spill than the other, but in practical terms it makes no difference.

I get the argument that fibres are weaker set at 45deg to a join than 90deg, but I wonder if the fact the fibres are set in epoxy is being missed. Since this contributes to locking them in place so preventing the fibres from compressing sideways if the seam is stretched apart. Also with the fibres laid across one another, a pull on one set of fibres is presumably offset by the consequential pull on the fibres at 90deg to them, etc.

Anyway I tried writing a reply to Sam's post and Nick's maths last night but my head hurt thinking about it and I opted for sleep instead. That and I can't back it up with any research, so I'm happy to accept the evidence on offer!
