Normally on a GP you don't hold on to the loom, it's just a way to connect the two paddle faces. You normally hold the face of the blade and perhaps overlap onto the loom. It's supposed to be narrow. Holding onto the face of the blade allows you to easily set the "cant" which is the angle of the blade when it enters the water, it's not straight up and down like a Euro paddle.
