Yes, really.

Our local innovator came up with a side mounted rudder a couple of decades ago and showed me the first one before delivering it to the owner. "Why on the port side." I asked. "Because the water goes down the plug hole the other way in the southern hemisphere." said Don. I christened it the Southern Viking Rudder and took photos of it. About a year later I can across a range of trial rudders on an Australian web site and they'd done one about a decade previously, mounted on the port side and called it the Viking Rudder.

I see I happen to have the photos lying here on the desk in front of me.

Hmmmm.... Incidentally it wasn't taken any further partly due to drag by interference it being on the side, or that was their reason.

So time-lines are interesting.
