You sprayed it on and it still has a bit of orange peel? (This isn't a criticism, it sounds like a lot of my spray jobs!)
What gun settings did you use?

Spraying any paint is an art form. There are SO many variables that can influence the final finish. Good paint used with a good gun helps.

To answer your question: Yes. The finish is semi-gloss and has a slight texture to it by design. It's not a high gloss, smooth finish. For a gun I used a 1.5mm tip in my DeVilbiss HVLP. The air pressure is set at the gun at 23 psi.

I guess this is a bit of an irreversible decision- if it is silicone- based, I'm guessing changing to a different paint later won't be an option?

I had the same concerns. I would consider it a permanent decision. In theory you could switch paint later if you needed to. Wearlon says because the silicone is distributed through-out the mixture (doesn't bloom to the surface like most silicone finishes) you can sand it off down to bare fiberglass and refinish. In theory... It's easy to touch-up though. You just spray/roll on another coat of the same stuff.

How much (volume) did you use for the Panthera?

They said a quart covers about 50 SF. I used just over half to cover the entire hull.

Did you use the 'primer and paint' combo from Wetlander, or just paint over epoxy? Or was there epoxy primer in there somewhere?

I used just the topcoat (total of three coats). Since I was applying it over the bare epoxy fill coat I didn't need the primer. They said their primer wouldn't hurt as it would add film thickness.

(Fantastic-looking job on the boat, BTW!)

Thanks John! I'll be posting "beauty" shots soon. I've had it out a few times now on flat and flowing water. I'm getting used to how the Panthera handles. She's a fast, agile kitty. I'm glad this is one kayak I can actually keep!
