i have built a couple strip builds prior to the petrel...and of course i am not done. that said, to this stage i see a couple elements that are a bit more complex than what i have done before....which were night herons.
first is the sharp aft chines......it's important to read the plans with respect to certain reference lines they provide so that you don't end up trying to wrap a strip around the chine. you need to follow those chine lines. not particularly difficult if you plan it...but i can imagine it would be very hard should the importance of that point escape your planning.
second is the recessed/sunken cockpit which is a bit more complex than other designs. again, not rocket science....but some extra planning work here is probably well worth it. i did not use plywood which is what you would get in the typical kit or what the plan suggests. i wanted the look of the cedar through and through. so some extra work in this space. if i had to do it over again, i think i would have put the cockpit in place and then stripped to it. i stripped it then cut the cockpit openings and placed the cockpit. it just struck me as i went through that that the other approach would have been easier/less risky.
other than that....i am finding it pretty straight forward and similar to other strip projects.
fwiw...i am shooting for a final built weight of around 30 lbs....so i am being very careful to get the tightest fitting seams between all my pieces. will let you know how it goes as we progress.
