That's what I do, trucker's hitch. With non stretch line. No rusty springs, hard edges, or highway noise. Bowline to trucker to slippery half hitch to two more half hitches and away you go.

When I need end ties, that's what I do as well. I don't want straps flapping in my field of view when I'm driving. 1/4" line is quiet and doesn't distract my vision.
I thought the original discussion here was about the straps that fasten the kayak to the rack? I wouldn't use line for that except in an emergency.
About fastening to the rack- I don't understand people who will spend either:
a) a lot of time and a good amount of money
or
b) money, possibly thousands of dollars
on a kayak and not buy 'proper' cradles for the roof rack, and 'proper' tie-down straps with padded cam buckles for fastening the boat to the rack.
A pair of 'proper' kayak straps costs under $25.
