Had a friend several years ago had a Ford Explorer with factory racks on the roof, he spaced the Yakima racks further out than the manual called for and it pulled the factory rack out of the roof. Apparently not a strong spot.

Most car/truck roofs are thin metal with hat section (like a flattened C channel) reinforcement pieces to stiffen it, if you tie off to a place without those sections the roof may fail.
