Thanks guys. Butt blocks are what I think I'm going to go with. I'd really like to not do the top one if I don't have to- we have a sleep number bed and it isn't very thick. Maybe I'll go with some thin plywood for the top and thicker for the bottom.
I'll try to remember to post back with how it turns out.
