The general consensus seems to be that rounded tips are quieter. They're also less prone to chipping. I make all of my paddles that way, with thin edges as well. Thick edges are noisy and less efficient, since the water doesn't flow over them as smoothly. I like to have enough flex in the blades that paddle has a bit of snap to it when paddling hard.
