It is perfectly possible to change the form spacing on any kayak to make a kayak of any desired length. But: Don't expect to get a kayak anything like the original.

For example, adjust the forms on a 17' kayak like the Petrel to make a 10' kayak will get you a short, stubby, extremely unstable, low volume kayak. It won't look anything like the original Petrel, and it will have almost no relation to the original design with regards to performance. You will be making a completely different kayak.

The first goal of a boat is to float. It accomplishes this by displacing a volume of water. Therefore the volume of the boat is of critical importance. A 10' boat is about 60% of the length of a 17' boat. This means the volume is about 40 less. At best it will float much deeper in the water.

The typical way to adjust up for the lost volume of a shorter boat is to make it wider. This is why short recreational kayaks are wide.

The Little Auk is a scaled down and adjusted Great Auk. The Petrel Play is a scaled down and adjusted Petrel. if you were to further scale and adjust the Petrel Play down to 10' you would actually get a boat that looks a lot like the Little Auk.
