I have the Veritas guide as well. I have float glass and SA sandpaper on that for rough work, and a bench grinder for really rough. Then I use diamond stones for fine edges and a little bit of buffing compound on a chunk of MDF for final touches.

For most of the tools above that I prepared for the class, I just free hand on the diamond stones. If more work was needed, I used the Veritas guide.
